About

MA Writing Genre Fiction*

If you want to make a career in commercial genre writing, this course is for you.

Most creative writing MFAs and MAs don't want to know about your love of science fiction, fantasy, romance, crime or horror - but at Edinburgh Napier University, we embrace great genre writing and welcome people who want to write it.

We're in Scotland, but you can study online with us from anywhere in the world. Our innovative approach to the training and support of aspiring writers is driven by intellectual ambition and practical experience. Instead of the usual peer review workshops, we use masterclasses and one-to-one mentoring to help you enhance your critical self-reflection skills and make you a more self-sufficient writer.

We set frequent writing assignments and expect you to bring the results to class. You're encouraged to self reflect on that work (with prompts from us), and to share that thinking in masterclass feedback sessions. During these, you get professional editorial feedback on your writing and your self-reflection skills. Plus, we support your growth as a writer with more than ten hours of one-to-one mentoring as you develop your own creative process and projects.

Overall, we aim to equip our graduates to succeed - and to change the culture they choose to enter. You will learn in the company of industry experts to develop your talent and ideas, and you will leave with the ability to approach your chosen publishing market with confidence, originality and skill.
